"One winter morning I looked out my bedroom window into the backyard garden, which was covered with stark white snow. To my amazement a stunning pink rose appeared to be growing out of the snow. How was it possible that all other plants and shrubs had succumbed to the harsh winter but this beauty stood there proudly with its head to the sky? I'll never forget it; it was the shade of pink like a newborn's cheeks. It made me think of the Bette Midler song 'The Rose.' The end of the song goes, 'Just remember / in the winter / far beneath / the bitter snows / lies the seed / that with the sun's love / in the spring / becomes the rose.' The moment I linked the rose in the garden to this song, I felt that spring was on its way - that it was time to transition, literally and metaphorically, from the bleak darkness of winter to light, and for my soul to be warmed and nourished by the sun. I had to capture this gentle yet powerful feeling somehow, but I didn't want to just put it on a canvas and hang it on a wall, as special as that is. I wanted to have it printed on something people could carry around with them as an ebullient, hopeful reminder...so they could feel the energy and heart of this story." - Danielle O'Neill, Designer
